Otters Bring Out Brooms For CCAA Sweep

CSUMB downs Humboldt in CCAA home opener

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay jumped ahead early in all three sets then held visiting Cal Poly Humboldt at Bay three time to earn a 25–21, 25–23, 25–16 win Friday evening in The Kelp Bed.

Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) and Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) led the Otter offense with 12 and 10 kills respectively. Senior right side hitter Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) added nine kills against no errors for a healthy .562 attack percentage.

Senior middle Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) was a force at the net, matching her career high with seven blocks. Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) led a balanced back row with 10 digs.

The Otters led wire-to-wire in the opening set, holding off a late rally that saw the Lumberjacks pull to within 20–19. The real battle came in set two, when CSUMB saw an 17–11 lead turn into a 23–22 Humboldt advantage. But a Jacks service error evened the score before a Peterson ace gave the Otters the only set point they would need.

CSUMB scored the first three points of the third set and never trailed, although a 4–0 spurt got the Jacks to within 17–15 late. But a Witzansky kill started the Otters on a match-ending 8–1 run.
 

FRIDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… After Humboldt took a late 23–22 lead in the second set, a Jacks serving error tied things up before Malia Peterson served her team-leading 16th ace of 2026 to give the Otters the only set point they would need. CSUMB never trailed again.

CANN LENDS A HAND… After missing last week's SoCal roadtrip, Maya Cann returned to the lineup and led the Otter 5–2 attack with 19 assists. In doing so, she passed Aly Fullbright (2019-22) for the No. 10 spot on the Otter career assist list. She'll enter play Saturday needing four more to become the 10th player in Otter history to reach 800 career assists.

A THORNE AT THE NET… With seven total blocks Friday against Humboldt, Malia Thorne passed Lilly Bandle for No. 23 on the Otter career list with 132 to Bandle's 130. Thorne also tied Bandle on the career block assist list with 104. For good measure, her solo block Friday tied her with Chandler McKean (2015-18) at No. 16 with 28 solos.

PETERSON MAKES HER POINTS… With 11.5 points in Friday's win over Humboldt, Malia Peterson passed Tiffaney Riggs for No. 21 on the Otter career points list at 522.5 points. She needs 46.5 points to pass Mollin Helfrich (2019-22) for a spot in the Top 20.
