Otters Vanquish Toros For Second Consecutive Sweep

Peterson’s 13 kills pace 25-22, 25-16, 25-20 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay continued its winning ways Saturday, completing a sweep of its 2-game homestand with a 25–22, 25–16, 25–20 sweep of Cal State Dominguez Hills in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters played their best statistical match of the season, and it showed in the final score. They hit a season-high .337 behind 46 kills and a season-low 13 errors. Their 46 kills and .337 attack percentage both rank No. 15 all-time in the Otter match record book.

Senior Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) topped an otherwise balanced CSUMB stat sheet with 13 kills. Freshman Milan Harvey (Bartlett, Tenn./Briarcrest Christian) led a quartet of Otters between six and eight kills with eight.

Senior middles Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) and Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) led the net defense with three blocks apiece. Libero Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) anchored the back line as per usual with 10 digs.

CSUMB never trailed while winning the first two sets. It held a 24–18 lead in the first before a late Toro run made things interesting. The Otters used a pair of gentle runs midway through set two to take that one comfortably.

The Toros took their first and only lead of the evening at 4–2 to open the third set. But kills from Harvey, Peterson and setter Maya Cann (Chico HS/Feather River College) quickly put CSUMB back on top. Dominguez Hills kept things close for the remainder of the match, but never again regained the lead.
 

SATURDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… After the Toros took their first lead of the evening at 4–2 top open the third set, sophomore Maya Giannini (Palma HS) served four points in a 5–0 run that put the Otters back on top. Dominguez never regained the lead.

CANN JOINS 800 CLUB… With 16 assists in Saturday's win over Dominguez Hills, Maya Cann became the 10th player in CSUMB history to record 800 career assists. She needs 22 more to pass Leana Moleta (2012-15) for No. 9 in the Otter career record book.

HITTING THE BOOKS… CSUMB's .337 attack percentage in Saturday's sweep of Dominguez Hills ranks No. 15 all-time for a match in CSUMB history. It was CSUMB's best performance since hitting .340 in a sweep of UC Merced on Sept. 7, 2024.

THE WAR AT THE NET RAGES ON… Lilly Bandle and Malia Thorne continued to race each other up the Otter career blocking charts, with each adding three to their accounts in Saturday's win over Dominguez Hills. Thorne maintained her slim lead in total blocks, 135 to 133. Bandle regained her slim lead on the career block assist list, 107–106. Thorne was the only Otter to record a solo block Saturday, extending her lead over Bandle to 29–26.

PETERSON CREEPING UP ON 500 KILLS… With 13 kills in Saturday's win over Dominguez Hills, Malia Peterson raised her career total to 461. She needs seven to pass Kendra Miller (2004-07) for 18th place on the career list and 29 to catch Chandler McKean (2015-18) for 17th. She is 39 kills away from becoming the 17th player in Otter history to record 500 kills.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters Head north for a pair of nonconference matches against CCAA foes next week, starting Thursday (Sept., 24) at Chico State. The trip will conclude Saturday (Sept. 26) with a visit to Cal Poly Humboldt.
