Otters And Wildcats Go The Distance Again

Teams play five for the 19th as Chico takes a thriller

CHICO, Calif. — As is their habit on the volleyball court, Cal State Monterey Bay and Chico State went the distance before Chico rallied for a 25–17, 17–25, 20–25, 25–20, 15–9 win in Acker Gym.

Senior Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) reached double figures for the sixth consecutive match with 16 kills. Senior opposite Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) added 11 for her fifth double-figures night of the season.

Thursday's first two sets mirrored each other, with first Chico and then CSUMB expanding on early leads for comfortable wins. The Otters broke a 10–10 tie in the third with a 6–1 run that gave them control.

But Chico eased away late in the fourth, scoring seven of the final 10 points to force a winner-take-all fifth. The Wildcats opened the fifth by scoring five unanswered points then held off a final CSUMB rally to take the match.

In addition to the attackers, Maya Giannini (Palma HS) and Macey Camacho (Chandler, Ariz./Basha HS) combined for 35 digs to anchor the back row. Senior setter Sofia MacPherson (Sacramento/Pleasant Grove HS) added a career-high four aces while Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) chipped in five blocks.

SATURDAY'S TURNING POINT WAS… After the Otters had pulled to within 8–6 in the fifth set, a Chico called timeout then stopped the CSUMB run with three consecutive points. The Otters never got closer than four the rest of the way.

OF COURSE IT WENT THE DISTANCE… Thursday's match was the 19th time in 41 meetings that the Otters and Wildcats needed all five sets to decide the outcome. That's the most 5-set matches the Otters have played against any opponent.

GIANNINI AND CAMACHO GIANNINI DIG CHICO… Maya Giannini and Macey Camacho both set career highs for digs Thursday night in Chico. Giannini surpassed her career best of 16 with a match-high 18 digs while Camacho equalled her career best with 17.

THE WAR AT THE NET RAGES ON… Lilly Bandle and Malia Thorne continued to race each other up the Otter career blocking charts Thursday in Chico, with Bandle getting the better numbers in this one. Bandle's three solo blocks pull her into a tie with Thorne in 16th place at 29 apiece. With two block assists, Bandle moved past Rheann Fall (2008-11) into 21st place at 109 (Thorne remains in 23rd at 107). On the total blocks list, Bandle's 5–1 edge in blocks Thursday squeezed her past Thorne into 22nd place, 138–136.

PETERSON KEEPS CREEPING UP ON 500 KILLS… With 16 kills in Thursday in Chico, Malia Peterson raised her career total to 477, passing Kendra Miller (2004-07) for 18th place on the career list. She need 13 to pass Chandler McKean (2015-18) for 17th. She is 23 kills away from becoming the 17th player in Otter history to record 500 kills.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Malia Peterson 16.0; KILLS: Malia Peterson 16; BLOCKS: Lilly Bandle 5; ACES: Sofia MacPherson 4; DIGS: Maya Giannini 18.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief 2-match roadtrip Saturday (Sept. 26) with a visit to Cal Poly Humboldt. The rare matinée is scheduled for a 1 p.m. first serve.
