Otters Drop Two Tight Matches On Opening Day

CSUMB falls in four to Sioux falls, NNU

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team played a pair of strong matches but fell twice on opening day of the Otter Invitational Friday in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB lost its opener to the University of Sioux Falls, 25–22, 25–21, 23–25, 25–20, before dropping its nightcap to Northwest Nazarene University, 25–22, 25–27, 25–23, 25–18.

Senior Abby Witzansky (West Torrance HS) led the Otter offense with 31 kills Friday, including a career-high 19 against NNU. She completed her first career- double-double with a career-high 10 digs against the Nighthawks.

Senior outside hitter Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) was the only other Otter to reach double figures Friday, recording 15 kills in the opener against Sioux Falls.

Senior middle Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) led a strong Otter net presence against NNU with six blocks. Witzansky chipped in four blocks of her own.

The opening set against Sioux Falls could have gone either way before the Cougars scored the final three points to break a 22–22 tie. USF held off a late Otter rally to take a 2–0 lead in the match before the Otters led wire-to-wire to pull one back in the third.

The Cougars puts the match away when a 5–0 run broke a 12–12 tie in the fourth set, and CSUMB never got closer than four points down the stretch.

The NNU match was every bit as tight as the set scores would have you believe. As happened in the opener, the first set was tied at 22–22 before the visitors scored the final three points to pull out the win.

CSUMB led for almost the entire second set and, even though the Nighthawks saved five match points to make the Otters sweat in the second, CSUMB held on for the win. CSUMB rallied from 23–18 down to tied the third set at 23 before NNU held on for the win.

A Witzansky kill gave the Otters their final lead of the night at 15–14 in the fourth, but that's where the comeback ran out of fuel, allowing NNU to ease away for the match victory.

CSUMB concludes tournament play Saturday by hosting Dominican University for a 2 p.m. first serve.
