Otters Open Home Slate With Historic Win Over Santa Clara

CSUMB beats Broncos for first time in 10 seasons with 11–8 victory

SEASIDE, Calif. — Playing its first home match since Mar. 11, 2020, the Cal State Monterey Bay water polo team made the most of the opportunity with an historic win over NCAA Division I member Santa Clara University, handing the Broncos an 11–8 defeat Saturday afternoon at the Otter Tank.

The win was just the second–ever over Santa Clara and the first for the Otter against the Broncos since Feb. 4, 2012, when current SCU Head Coach Claire Linney was an assistant coach at CSUMB.

Senior Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS) led the offense with her first hat trick of the season, but the star of this game was freshman goalkeeper Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) who made 13 saves, including several from point blank range, to allow the Otters to lead throughout the contest.

"After last weekend, we made some defensive adjustments which the team executed really well today," says CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "With Megan in control of the cage, we could really push our offense. This win was such a great way to return home after 689 days."

It took the Otters just 14 seconds to break the ice when junior center Laura Heberle (Sacramento/American River College) scored quickly after an SCU exclusion to give CSUMB it never would relinquish. Centis scored on a the next CSUMB possession.

The Otters pulled away by out–scoring the Broncos 5–1 in the second period to take a 8–4 lead at the half. Santa Clara tried to make a game of it late, but a pair of fourth–quarter markers from freshman Shelby Fortune (San Diego/Patrick Henry HS) kept the Broncos at bay.

CSUMB hits the road for the next six weeks, during which it the Otters will play 12 matches. They'll return home to The Otter Tank to host Western Water Polo Association rival Fresno Pacific University Mar. 12.
