No. 11 San Jose State Pulls Away For 14–5 Win

Catalina Gillis, Kaitlin Rooney each score twice for the Otters

SAN JOSE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played tough against No. 11 San Jose State, but the Spartans pulled away in the second half to earn a 14–5 decision Saturday afternoon at the Spartan Recreation and Aquatic Center.

A Catalina Gillis (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) goal pulled the Otters to within 4–3 midway through the second period. But San Jose scored the final three goals of the first half as part of a 10–0 run that put the game away.

Gillis and Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) led the Otter offense with two goals apiece. Junior center Kaya Ortega (Fullerton HS) accounted for CSUMB's other marker.

Freshman Megan Taylor (Capo Valley HS) made double–digit saves for the third consecutive game, finishing with 10. Taylor and Gillis led the defense in steals with four and three respectively.

"Our game plan was to come out hard against San Jose. We were able to keep that intensity throughout the game," says CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We saw every player contribute in the water and supporting their teammates which made it a really fun game."

The Otters will continue their run against NCAA Division I competition next week when they head to the Santa Clara Tournament Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 19–20. CSUMB will meet Brown and Marist universities Saturday before a rematch with Santa Clara Sunday afternoon.
