CLAREMONT, Calif. —
Cal State Monterey Bay water polo split a pair of matches Saturday to finish 2–2 at the Claremont Convergence Tournament. CSUMB fell to Whittier College 11–7 at Haldeman Pool in Claremont in the morning before thumping Occidental College 16–4 in the University of La Verne's Las Flores Pool in the afternoon.

The Otter fell to No. 12 Loyola Marymount and beat the University of Redlands Friday.

Sophomore Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) led the Otter offense with five goals and three assists Saturday, including her third hat trick of the season in the win over Occidental. Fellow sophomore Cat Gillis (Portland, Ore./Sunset HS) scored four times and also posted a hat trick against Occidental.

The Otters and Whittier played to a 5–5 tie through the first 22 minutes. But the Poets exploded for five unanswered goals to take control midway through the third period.

The Occidental game held very little drama as CSUMB came out on fire, scoring six goals in the first seven minutes as part of an 8–0 run the put the outcome on ice early. Oxy never got closer than seven goals for the balance of the match.

In addition to Rooney and Gillis, Angela Steele (Agoura HS) scored in both games Saturday and finished with three goals and three assists. Zoe Grammer (Placentia/El Dorado HS) played 48 of 64 minutes in goal, making seven saves and earning the win against Occidental.

After a playing on the road for nearly six full weeks, the Otters finally return home to host WWPA rival McKendree University Wednesday, Mar. 11 in the Otter Tank. First sprint is scheduled for 7 p.m.
