Big Night For McBride Leads Otters Over McKendree, 17–9

Gwynne McBride sets career highs with four goals, five shots and four steals

SEASIDE, Calif. — A big night for junior Gwynne McBride (Atwater/Colony HS) led Cal State Monterey Bay water polo to a convincing 17–9 victory over visiting McKendree University Wednesday night in the Otter Tank.

McBride finished with career highs of four goals, five shots and four steals in leading CSUMB to its highest goal output of the season. In fact, the 17 goals were the most ever by the Otters against an NCAA Division II opponents and the fifth most ever scored against all opponents.

For those who are curious, CSUMB scored 28 goals in a 28–6 win over Cal Tech last season to set the school record.

McBride's quartet of scores proved to be the lone hat trick of the night, although six other Otters posted multi–goal games. Leading that group was sophomore Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS), who added two goals to her career high with five assists.

The Otters never trailed after scoring the game's first two goals. They blew the game open by scoring five unanswered goals to end the first half an start the second, expanding a 7–4 lead to a 12–4 advantage that wouldn't be challenged over the final 12 minutes.

"The team was really excited to be back home at the Otter Tank and it showed in how we played," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We are grateful McKendree made the trip despite all that is going on and played a strong game. We had to make the adjustments to cover their mobile post up game."

Although McKendree is a fellow Western Water Polo Association member, Wednesday's game did not count as a conference match. CSUMB officially opens WWPA play Saturday with a trip to Fresno Pacific University. The Otters are scheduled to return home to host Sonoma State on Mar. 21.
