Young Otters Get Their Paws Wet In Season Opener vs. SCU

Sophomore Olivia Centis scores hat trick but Santa Clara wins, 13–8

January 25, 2020

SEASIDE, Calif. — The young Cal State Monterey Bay team saw its first action of 2020 with a 13–8 loss to Santa Clara University Saturday afternoon in The Otter Tank.

Sophomore Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS) picked up where she left off her strong freshman campaign with a hat trick, an assist and a steal to lead the Otters. Freshmen Cecile Judy (Alameda HS) and Grace Frias (Sunset HS/Cabrillo College) each scored her first collegiate goal. Freshman goalkeeper Zoe Grammer (Placentia/El Dorado HS) also gave a promising performance with six blocks and a steal.

In addition to the youngsters, CSUMB's only two seniors — Angela Steele (Agoura HS) and Sarah Smith (Cypress HS) — also contributed, with Steele scoring twice and Smith scoring once.

Santa Clara scored on four of its first six possessions to claim early control. CSUMB settled in after the blitz, however, with two goals each from Centis and Steele narrowing the gap to 6–4 by halftime.

Santa Clara responded with five consecutive goals to open the second half. The Otters never got closer than five the rest of the way.

"With a team comprised mostly of new players, it was a challenge to take on an NCAA Division I team for our first game," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmitt. "You could see the team chemistry we have been working on for the last few months start to click. We are excited to get back in the pool and get back to work."

The Otters will have a long break before they return to game action with a rematch at Santa Clara on Feb. 22. CSUMB's next home game will be Mar. 11 versus Western Water Polo Association foe McKendree University.
