Late Surge Carries No. 20 UCSD Past Otters, 19–7

Kaitlin Rooney nets a hat trick, Olivia Woolery contributes three steals

SEASIDE, Calif. — A strong start kept the Otters close early, but No. 20 UC San Diego went on a 10–1 run at the start of the second half to pull away for a 19–7 win Friday night in The Otter Tank.

CSUMB got a hat trick from freshman Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) to lead the offense and a 3–steal effort from Olivia Woolery (San Diego/Clairemont HS) to lead the defense. But UCSD's power play was too lethal for any Otter heroics to overcome in this one. The Tritons finished 7–for–7 on the power play and added a pair of 5–meter goals.

The Otters were within 4–2 after one period. It would have been 4–3 but for starting goalkeeper Bennett Bugelli deflecting a Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) 5–meter attempt over the crossbar. The Tritons responded with a 5–1 run to close the first half and take control of the contest.

In addition to Rooney, Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS) and Lovos enjoyed 2–goal performances. Tucker's two scores give her 51 for the season. She becomes the eighth different player in CSUMB history to score 50 goals in a single season.

Shelby Stephens (Stockton/Lincoln HS) added six saves and a steal between the pipes. She now has 168 saves in 2019, good for No. 9 on the Otter single–season list.

"We can hang with the DI teams," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "We built on our game from Wednesday (versus San Diego State) and our defense continued to be really strong. We just need to continue putting the work in the pool to get to the next step."

CSUMB hits the road for a single game at Fresno Pacific on Apr. 13. The Otters return home to close the regular season by hosting Cal State East Bay on Apr. 19.
