Morgan Tucker records her ninth hat trick; Shelby Stephens collects career save No. 300

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay played well, but No. 20 San Diego State played better in earning a 17–6 water polo victory Wednesday night at the Otter Tank.

Senior Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS) led the Otter offense with three goals. It marked her ninth hat trick of the season as well as her fifth consecutive multi–goal game. Junior Angela Steele (Agoura HS), in her first game back after missing six due to injury, also scored for CSUMB as did freshman Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS) and senior Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS).

Shelby Stephens (San Joaquin Delta College) and Olivia Woolery (San Diego/Clairemont HS) led the defense with two steals apiece. Stephens added eight saves.

"Overall we played a strong game," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "Defensively, we knew they would be pushing the counter and we did a great job covering it. Offensively, we created movement and made the necessary adjustments. Unfortunately, we couldn't find the back of the net.

The Aztecs came at the Otters in waves, often substituting all six field players at a time. The fresh bodies paid late dividends as SDSU scored 10 second–half goals, the most allowed by the Otters in a half this season.

Also noteworthy from Wednesday game was Stephens 300th career save (now 304). She becomes just the fifth goalie in Otter history to amass 300 or more career saves.

CSUMB returns to action Friday night when Western Water Polo Association rival UC San Diego visits the Otter Tank. First sprint is scheduled for 6 p.m.
