Otters, East Bay trade big runs on CSUMB Senior Day

SEASIDE, Calif. — A game of rallies ended a few minutes too soon for Cal State Monterey Bay as Cal State East Bay held on to earn a 12–9 water polo victory Friday afternoon in the Otter Tank.

It was Senior Day for CSUMB with five Otters playing their final regular season games. It took awhile for the Otters to find their footing after the emotional pregame ceremonies, and that proved to be just enough of an edge for East Bay.

The Pioneers raced to leads of 4–0 and 6–1 before the Otters got in gear. Freshman Kaya Ortega (Fullerton HS) got CSUMB rolling with a goal six seconds before halftime. That sparked a 5–0 Otter run that tied the game at 6–6 late in the third.

The teams traded goals to end the third period before East Bay opened the fourth on a 5–0 run of its own to jump back in front, 12–7. Late goals by senior Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) and senior Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS) began the Otter response before time ran out on the final Otter rally.

CSUMB got three goals, three assists and a pair of steals from Lovos, who ran her goal–scoring streak to a career–high 14 games. Tucker added a pair of markers for her eighth consecutive multi–goal game.

Senior defender Olivia Woolery San Diego/Clairemont HS) had two assists and a steal while senior goalkeeper Shelby Stephens (Stockton/Delta College) made five saves. CSUMB's fifth senior, attacker Olivia Boisen (Capo Valley HS), also saw extensive action and was credited with one shot.

"It was a bittersweet game," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "Our seniors played great and we gave East Bay a run for its money. This team continues to prove that it can be competitive with each and every team in our conference."

The Otters head east to begin the postseason next week at the Western Water Polo Association Championship Tournament Apr. 26–28 in Geneva, Ohio.
