Incredible Comeback Ends In Sudden Death Heartbreak

Otters rally from six down in final 6:48 but fall in Fresno, 15–14

FRESNO, Calif. — An incredible fourth quarter comeback turned into heartbreak for Cal State Monterey Bay water polo Saturday afternoon. Fresno Pacific scored on its second possession in sudden death overtime to take a 15–14 decision at the Sunnyside Aquatics Complex.

CSUMB rallied from six goals down in the final seven minutes of regulation to force overtime on Sarah Smith's (Cypress HS) even strength goal with seven seconds remaining in regulation. That set the teams up for two scoreless overtime periods leading to sudden death.

The teams traded steals to begin sudden death before the Sunbirds drew an ejection on a swift counter. Although the Otter defense had successfully killed eight power play on the day, Fresno took advantage of the defense scramble in transition to convert when Sam Witt finished the game eight seconds into the 6–on–5.

Tough ending aside, Saturday's match will go down amongst the greatest comebacks in Otter Athletics history.

"Going into fourth quarter, we knew we had a lot of work to do and the team stepped up to the challenge," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "The heart of this team really showed today."

Senior Morgan Tucker (Clairemont HS) scored a career–high six goals to lead the CSUMB offense. It marked her 10th hat trick of 2019 and her seventh consecutive multi–goal game.

Fellow senior Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) passed a career–high seven assists and matched her career high with nine points. She now has 82 points in 2019, tied with Sarah Burke (2007) for No. 10 on the Otter single–season list.

Olivia Woolery (Clairemont HS) collected a career–high six steals to lead the Otter defense. She now has 57 steals in 2019, tying Lucy Gates (2018), Julie Cooper (2011) and Kelli Lyons (2005) for No. 5 on the Otter single–season list.

CSUMB returns home to conclude its regular season schedule by hosting Cal State East Bay Friday (Apr. 19) in The Otter Tank. First sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
