One Run The Difference As East Bay Holds Off Otters

A 7–0 run by the Pioneers breaks open a tie game in a 14–9 East Bay win

HAYWARD, Calif. — One big run midway through the first half proved to be the difference as Cal State East Bay held off Cal State Monterey Bay for a 14–9 water polo victory Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Pool. The loss snapped CSUMB's 4–match winning streak.

The match was tied 3–3 when East Bay went on a 7–0 run to open a 10–3 advantage. The Otters scored four of the next five goals to close the gap, but the teams basically traded goals down the stretch and CSUMB could get no closer.

Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS) scored four goals Saturday to raise her team–leading total to 37, already No. 21 on the Otter list for goals scored in a season. Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) added four assists to give her 21 for the season, a mark the ranks No. 20 on that list. Lovos now has 66 career assists, tying her with Julie Cooper and Katie Sowul for sixth place on the Otter career assist list.

"It is always an interesting game at East Bay due to their pool," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "Today, we didn't adapt well to the smaller course. We are looking forward to getting back to work in a 25 meter pool tomorrow."

CSUMB jumps right back into the pool Sunday afternoon by hosting Western Water Polo Association foe Sonoma State in The Otter Tank. First sprint is scheduled for 1 p.m.
