Late Rally Not Enough As Sonoma State Holds On, 11–8

Morgan Tucker, Olivia Centis score two goals apiece

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Despite several rally attempts, the Cal State Monterey Bay water polo team never could dig itself out of an early hole as Sonoma State held on for an 11–8 win Saturday afternoon in Rudloff Pool. The result allowed Sonoma to avenge an 8–7 loss to the Otters in Seaside on Mar. 10.

Olivia Centis (Beaverton, Ore./Westview HS) and Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS) scored two goals apiece to lead CSUMB. Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) added a goal, an assist and five steals.

Sonoma jumped to a 4–1 lead at the end of the first quarter. Goals by Sarah Smith (Cypress HS) and Tucker pulled the Otters to within one midway through the second, but they were never able to pull closer.

CSUMB rallied with three goals in the final 5:29 of regulation, but by then, the damage had been done.

"We created a lot of great opportunities today," said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmit. "Unfortunately, we were unable to convert enough of them into goals."

CSUMB will have its work cut out next week when it returns home to host a pair of nationally–ranked opponents in rare midweek action. The Otters welcome No. 17 UC Santa Barbara to The Otter Tank Monday afternoon. No. 9 UC Davis pays a visit Wednesday.
