CLAREMONT, Calif. —
The Cal State Monterey Bay water polo team continues to roll. Saturday, the Otters did it in record setting fashion to sweep a pair of games at the Claremont Convergence Tournament.

The Otters opened the day by scoring a school record 28 goals in a 28–6 win over Cal Tech at Las Flores Pool in La Verne. In the afternoon, they used a big third period to defeat Claremont–McKenna–Scripps 10–8 at the Axelrood Aquatics Center in Claremont.

The victories ran CSUMB's winning streak to four games, its longest such streak since winning five in a row from Mar. 8–23, 2014. The Otter record for consecutive wins is six, set during the 2015 and 2016 seasons.

Saturday's highlight was, of course, the fireworks display put on against Cal Tech. The 28 goals obliterated the record of 21 set in a 21–3 win over Cal Maritime on Jan. 27, 2007. Senior Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) and freshman Kaya Ortega (Fullerton HS) led the onslaught with five goals and four assists apiece.

Senior Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS), freshman Kaitlin Rooney (Morgan Hill/Presentation HS) and sophomore Madison Nolen (Merced HS) added hat tricks of their own. Lovos and junior Whitney Dore (Houston/Cypress Creek HS) led the defense with five steals each.

The afternoon game against CMS provided a little more traditional entertainment value. The Otters raced to a 3–0 lead in the first six minutes before the Athenas responded by scoring five of the next six goals to take a 5–4 lead.

CSUMB met the challenge with five unanswered goals of its own. Sarah Smith's (Cypress HS) power play marker just before halftime proved to be the match–winner.

Tucker led the attack against CMS with her third consecutive hat trick and sixth of the season.

"Our wins yesterday set us up nicely for today, said CSUMB Head Coach Emily Schmitt. "The team went into both games fired up and, because of that, we were able to walk away with two more wins. We are looking forward to carrying this momentum into next weekend."

The Otters return to the northern part of the state to conclude their marathon 13–match roadtrip Saturday (Mar. 9) at Cal State East Bay. The Otters return home to host Sonoma State the following afternoon.
