ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay couldn't hold on late as a 5–goal final period lifted host Sonoma State to a 15–10 win Sunday afternoon at SSU's Rudloff Pool.
The Otters led early in a wild first period that saw Sonoma score inside the final minute to take a 5–4 lead. The teams played to a standstill in the second quarter with
Sarah Smith (Cypress HS) scoring inside the final minute to pull the Otters to within 8–7 at the half.
The teams traded two–goal bursts in the third quarter, with
Megan Dahlson (Esperanza HS) and
Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Clairemont HS) answering goals by Cassidy Mundt and Taylor Brooks to keep it a one–goal game heading to the final period. Tucker scored again two minutes into the final frame, but Mundt followed with two consecutive tallies to help Sonoma pull away.
"Today's game was a complete team effort. We had players playing positions they normally do not play and they stepped up for us," said CSUMB Head Coach
Emily Schmitt. "We had goals from six different players as well as notable defensive plays by numerous players as well including four steals and a field block by Lucy (Gates)."
Tucker, Smith, Dahlson and
Olivia Woolery (San Diego/Clairemont HS) each scored two goals to lead the CSUMB offense. The Otters also got scores from
Lucy Gates (Oceanside HS/Palomar College),
Marisa Lovos Tualatin [Ore.] HS).
Shelby Stephens (Stockton/Lincoln HS) went the distance in goal and made six saves.
CSUMB returns home to close the regular season Saturday, Apr. 14, against Fresno Pacific University. First sprint is set for 1 p.m. in the Otter Tank.
GO OTTERS!
