SEASIDE, Calif. — A first quarter hat trick from Pioneer freshman Adrien Van Dyke put the Cal State Monterey Bay water polo team in a hole from which it couldn't extricate itself as No. 25 Cal State East Bay eased away late to take a 15–8 decision Friday in the Otter Tank.
CSUMB got a hat trick of its own from junior
Morgan Tucker (San Diego/Caliremont HS), who helped the Otters pull to within two goals at the end of the first quarter and two within three just seconds in the third. Her final goal brought CSUMB two within 12–8 with more than six minutes remaining in regulation, but East Bay scored the final three to ice the game.
In addition to Tucker, CSUMB got goals from
Angela Steele,
Olivia Boisen,
Lucy Gates,
Nicole Lyckofors and
Sarah Smith. Gates and
Marisa Lovos led the way with three and two assists respectively while Steele and Gates anchored the defense with two steals apiece.
Shelby Stephens and
Laurel Doyle split time in the cage. Stephens totalled four saves and two takeaways in the first half. Doyle made one save over the final 16 minutes.
The Otters will close the weekend with a trip to Rohnert Park Sunday to take on Sonoma State. First sprint at SSU's Rudloff Pool is scheduled for 1 p.m.
