Otters and Sonoma State to meet at 11:15 a.m. in third place match

LA JOLLA, Calif. — No. 6 seed Cal State Monterey Bay will have a chance to play for third place in the Western Water Polo Association Championship Tournament after falling 12–2 to Cal State East Bay in semifinal action Saturday at UC San Diego's Canyonview Aquatic Center.

The Otters will play Sonoma State, which fell to UC San Diego 11–1 Saturday, Sunday at 11:15 a.m. The winner will finish third and the loser fourth in the WWPA Tournament.

CSUMB played East much tougher in two regular season meetings, but the Pioneers came out on fire Saturday. East Bay scored the game's first 11 goals to remove any doubt from the outcome. Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) finally got CSUMB on the board three minutes into the fourth quarter. Freshman Nicole Lyckfors (Alameda HS) closed the scoring with 1:28 remaining.

Angela Steele (Agoura HS) and Olivia Woolery (San Diego/Clairemont HS) led the defense with three steals apiece. Shelby Stephens (San Joaquin Delta College) went the distance in goal and made five saves.
