Freshman Nicole Lyckfors records hat trick in win over Redlands

SANTA CLARA, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay water polo picked up its first win of the season Sunday morning, defeating University of Redlands 8–2 in its third game of the San Clara Water Polo Invitational at the Sullivan Aquatics Center. The Otters finished tournament play with a 13–4 loss to Indiana University Sunday afternoon.

Freshman Nicole Lyckfors (Alameda HS) recorded her first collegiate hat trick in the win over Redlands and added a goal in the Indiana match to finish Sunday with a team–high four goals. Marisa Lovos (Tualatin [Ore.] HS) and Lucy Gates (Oceanside HS/Palomar College) each scored twice against Redlands.

Lyckfors scored all three of her goals against Redlands as part of a 6–0 run that turned a 1–1 tie into a 7–1 Otter lead 55 seconds into the fourth quarter. Her goal against Indiana stifled a 9–0 Hoosier run to open the match.

CSUMB played Indiana to a 4–4 tie over the final 13:07, but the big early run was enough of a cushion for the Big 10 members.

CSUMB continues its mammoth 17–match road trip for matches 12–14 of the adventure at the Claremont Convergence Tournament Mar. 2–3. CSUMB will play Redlands and Concordia–Irvine Mar. 2 and before facing Whittier and host Claremont–Mudd–Scripps Colleges Mar. 3.
