MERCYHURST 13, CAL STATE MONTEREY BAY 11 -- BOX SCORE

HAYWARD, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team battled Mercyhurst University on Friday afternoon at the WWPA Championship Tournament and while Tatiana Veloso (Rio de Janiero, Brazil) scored four times, it was not enough offense for CSUMB as the No. 5 seeded Otters fell to the No. 4 seeded Lakers, 11-13.

The Lakers got on the board first, but CSUMB followed that up with a penalty shot at the 3:27 mark by Cami Kellogg (Felton, Calif. / San Lorenzo Valley HS) to tie the game at one goal apiece. The Otters would be outscored in each of the first two quarters, leading to an 8–4 Mercyhurst lead at halftime.

The Lakers began the third quarter on a 2–0 run to take a 10-4 lead, but Kellogg quieted the crowd with her second goal of the game. The Otters owned the fourth quarter by scoring six times, including two of Veloso's four goals in the game. CSUMB got within three goals at 9-12 after Veloso capped off a 3-0 Otter run that also featured goals from Kellogg and Marisa Lovos (Tualatin High School). Monterey Bay scored twice more at the end of the period to get within two scores at 11-13, but could not get any closer to the comeback as time expired on the 11-13 loss.

In addition to Veloso's four goals, Kellogg scored three times while Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich.) netted a hat trick as well. Morgen Fain (Mt. Whitney High School) recorded four saves and three steals for the Otters.

Monterey Bay will play in the fifth place game on Sunday morning at 10 a.m. against the No. 6 seeded Gannon Lady Knights.
