SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team went the distance and then some to down CCAA newcomer Cal State San Marcos 25–22, 23–25, 25–23, 18–25, 15–13 Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.
Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) led four Otters in double figures with a match–high 21 kills. In so doing, she passed
Julia Ashen for No. 2 on the Otter career kills list with 1,287. CSUMB also got 33 digs from
Rachel Cookus (Thousand Oaks HS), good for the No. 4 mark on the Otter list for a 5–set match, and a career–high 56 assists from sophomore
Whitney Hirst (Huntington Beach/Edison HS), tied for the No. 7 mark in Otter history on that list.
The Otters 4–8 and 3–4 in CCAA play with the win. They hit the road for three matches next week beginning Tuesday at Cal State San Bernardino. CSUMB returns home to host UC San Diego on Oct. 15.
