LA JOLLA, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay water polo team cut Sonoma State's lead to one on two different occasions but weren't able to capitalize, falling 7-4 to the Seawolves in the Western Water Polo Association (WWPA) Championships third-place match on Sunday in La Jolla.
Junior
Ashton Palmer (Salt Lake City, Utah/Cottonwood HS) was named to the WWPA All-Tournament first team while freshman
Cami Kellogg (Felton/San Lorenzo HS) garnered second team honors. In the tournament's three games, Palmer tallied three goals while Kellogg chipped in two.
Palmer put CSUMB on the board first at the 6:58 mark of the second quarter. The Seawolves' responded with three unanswered goals to take a 3-1 lead into the halftime break.
Freshman
Adrianna Craft (Belmont, Mich./Rockford HS) netted her first of three goals in the final 30 seconds of the third quarter
Sonoma opened the second half with a goal by Brittny Hummel to make it 4-2. Between Crafts final two goals, SSU's Alexa May slipped one past CSUMB's defense to prevent the Otters from evening the score. The Seawolves pulled away with two goals in a one-minute period to clinch the win.
Facing 21 shots in the contest, junior
Amanda Jennings (Oakley/Freedom HS) stopped 14 to keep CSUMB within striking distance.
