WWPA TOURNAMENT CENTRAL

LA JOLLA, Calif.
– The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team dropped a heartbreaker Saturday in the WWPA Championship semifinals, falling 5-4 to rival Cal State East Bay.

CSUMB (10-18) will play for third place on Sunday at 11 a.m., facing Sonoma State (8-22) for the second time this season.  The Otters have dropped the previous two games against the Seawolves by scores of 8-7 and 11-7.

The Otters played catch-up thoughout the entire game after East Bay took an 1-0 lead in the final minute of the first quarter.  CSUMB never let the Pioneers take a lead greater than one goal and evened the score a total of four times.

In the final four minutes of the third quarter, Amanda Jennings (Oakley/Freedom HS) stopped five consecutive East Bay attempts to keep the score knotted at 4-4.

The Pioneers winning goal came from Allison Zell at the 6:30 minute mark.

On CSUMB's final possession, junior Jessica Laurence (Danville/Monte Vista HS) shot from five meters out that was halted by Pioneer goalie Marrina Nation with less than 30 seconds remaining.

East Bay spread out the pool as the clock ran down to zero.
