SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team dropped Friday's twinbill to visiting Cal State Dominguez Hills 6-1 and 7-1. The nightcap was extended to 10 innings after neither team was able to break a 1-1 tie after seven.
Senior
Mark Hurley (Hollister/College of San Mateo) had a team-best 4-for-9 performance with a double in the two losses.
Both teams will attempt to get in a single 9-inning game on Saturday despite heavy rain forecasted. The first pitch has been moved up to 10:30 a.m.
GAME 1: CSUDH 6, CSUMB 1
With two outs in the seventh inning, senior Kaden Kamoe (Aiea, Hawaii/Univ. of Hawaii) halted Jeffrey Gogue's no-hitter with a double off the center field wall.
The Toros broke open the game with three runs in third inning on four hits, highlighted by Alex Sixto's 2 RBI double down the right line.
CSUDH added single runs in the fourth, sixth and seventh innings to take a 6-0 lead.
The Otters finally got on the board in the ninth inning. Hurley hit a RBI double to right center after junior Ty Morris (Royal Oaks/North Monterey County HS) leadoff with a standup triple.
GAME 2: CSUDH 7, CSUMB 1 – 10 innings
Junior
Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) struck out 10 batters for his second best performance in his career. He gave up just one hit with one unearned run scoring in his seven innings of action.
The Otters took a quick 1-0 lead in the first inning when Morris plated on a passed ball after being hit by pitch and granted first base. Hurley's single moved Morris to second and both runners advanced 90 feet on a groundout by
Richie Johnson (San Leandro/San Jose State).
CSUDH knotted the game at one run apiece on Danny Haley's RBI single to left field after Taylor Kahanowitch reached third on a CSUMB error.
CSUMB had walk-off opportunities in both the eighth and ninth innings. Hurley led off the eighth with a single and stole second but the Otters were unsuccessful at bringing him home. In the next inning,
Michael Lonsdale (Castro Valley/Chabot College) hit a one-out single and advanced to third on
Matt Urakami's (Branham HS) single up the middle. Both runners were stranded.
The Toro offense exploded in the top of the 10th, scoring six runs on six hits and two Otter errors, highlighted by a 2-run home run by Peter Ives.
