LA JOLLA, Calif. – A Triton walk-off single forced the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team to settle for a series split in its four-game CCAA series at UC San Diego.
CSUMB, after sweeping Saturday's doubleheader, dropped the finale on Sunday, 4-3, at Triton Ballpark. The contest consisted of three ties with neither team taking more than a one run lead.
The Otters actually outhit the Tritons 10-7, but CSUMB stranded 10 while UCSD only left four on base.
Junior second baseman
Brian Hamm (Pleasanton/Chabot College) had a game-high 4-for-5 performance while senior outfielder
Mark Hurley (Hollister/College of San Mateo) recorded three hits.
UCSD's Sanchez hit a two-out RBI single through the left side and Brett Levy just barely beat the tag at home plate for the win.
CSUMB struck first when Hamm led off the game with a single and would later score on senior
Richie Johnson's (San Leandro/San Jose State) sacrifice fly.
The Tritons would take the lead in the fourth inning on Justin Rahn's 2 RBI double to right center.
In the fifth, the Otters knotted the game at two runs apiece on Hamm's RBI single.
With one out, UCSD's Nick La Face tripled down the right line and scored on a ground out by Michael Mann to put the Tritons back on top 3-2.
Once again CSUMB evened the game at 3-3 in the eighth inning when Hamm drove in a run after junior
Ty Morris (Royal Oaks/North Monterey County HS) singled and stole second to get into scoring position.
Senior
A.J. Quintero (Vacaville/Sacramento City College) went eight innings, giving up only three runs on six hits. He struck out while walking two. UCSD's starter Troy Cruz tossed seven innings, relinquishing two runs on eight hits.
CSUMB takes a break from its conference schedule next weekend, traveling to Fresno Pacific for a single game Friday (6 p.m.) before hosting the Sunbirds in a doubleheader Saturday at 11 a.m.
