Grant-Parks Homer Secures CSUMB Series Win

CSUMB splits doubleheader with Point Loma Nazarene

SEASIDE, Calif. – The No. 14 Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team snagged its first series win Saturday with a twinbill split against visiting Point Loma Nazarene at the Otter Sports Complex.  Otters held on to a 5-3 win in game one before falling 3-2 in the nightcap.
 
Senior Mark Hurley (Hollister/College of San Mateo) and junior Brian Hamm (Pleasanton/Chabot College) both registered a team-best four hits including a double on the day.  Junior Blake Grant-Parks (Yuba City/Sierra College) crushed CSUMB's first home run of 2014 while going 3-for-6 at the plate.
 
The Otters take to the road to begin CCAA play next weekend, traveling to Cal Poly Pomona for a four-game series beginning on Friday, Feb. 14 at 2 p.m.

GAME 1: CSUMB 5, PLNU 3
The Otters jumped out early with Grant-Parks 2 RBI double off the right-center wall after Hamm and Hurley tallied singles to get on base.
 
CSUMB doubled its run total in the second. Ty Morris (Royal Oaks/MPC) and Shawn Wheeler (Citrus Heights/Sacramento State) drew walks to begin the inning and advanced 90 yards on Matt Urakami's (San Jose/Branham HS) sacrifice bunt.  Hamm drove in Morris on a hard hit to right center and Andres Coll (Panorama City/Arleta HS) laid down a perfect bunt down the first baseline to plate Wheeler.
 
The Sea Lions got on the board in the third with two runs highlighted by a triple by Michael Marcoux.
 
Grant-Parks answered with a homer in CSUMB's next frame, taking the ball deep over the right wall.
 
PLNU attempted a rally in the ninth with a run but senior closer Rickey Guerrero (Stockton/MPC) shut it down by forcing a groundout to earn his first save of 2014.
 
Senior Josh Eagle (Antioch/Sierra College) nabbed the win after five innings of action while PLNU's Garrett Gooding took the loss after giving up five Otter runs.

GAME 2: PLNU 3, CSUMB 2
 A three-run second inning was starter Jeff Owen (Clovis East HS) on blemish in his five innings of action on the mound, resulting in his first loss since March 23, 2013.  Owen struck out a series-best seven batters.
 
Senior Richie Johnson (San Leandro/San Jose State) scored CSUMB's first run in the third after a 1-out double to left center and crossed home on Urakami's sacrifice fly to deep left. 
 
The Otters came within one run in the fifth inning. Hurley's RBI double plated Urakami after he laid one down the right side.
 
CSUMB made a charge in its final frame with a runner on third with two outs but PLNU's Lillicrop forced a groundout for the team's first win of 2014.
