Chezla Self is one of three Otter seniors who will be playing in their final collegiate games this weekend.
SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team closes its 2013-14 schedule with a pair of games in the Bay area this weekend. The Otters play at Sonoma State Friday (Feb. 28) and at San Francisco State Saturday (Mar. 1). Both games tipoff at 5:30 p.m. as the openers of men's/women's doubleheader action.
As with all CSUMB basketball games, live audio will be available for both games at OtterAthletics.com. As always on the road, Rob Ponce will call the action for both games. Both Sonoma State and San Francisco State will have live stats and streaming video on their respective websites.
SCOUTING THE SEAWOLVES (4–20, 3–17 CCAA): Like the Otters, the Seawolves suffered some early personnel losses and have spent the balance of the season trying to adjust. Senior forward Kristina Fahey is the only Seawolf scoring in double figures, starting the week at 10.0 ppg. She is also the team's top rebounder (6.1 rpg) and passer (2.8 apg).
WHEN LAST WE MET: The Otter defense gave its best performance of the season, limiting Sonoma to 16 points in the first half and 36 in the game as the Otters cruised to a 50–36 victory in The Kelp Bed on Jan. 25. The Seawolves took their only lead of the game at 4–2 before CSUMB rattled off 10 unanswered points to take the lead for good. A Chezla Self (Sacramento/San Joaquin Delta College) 3–pointer made it 28–16 Otters and the lead remained in double digits for the final 21:25. Alexous Robinson posted a 12–point, 12–rebound double–double for the Otters. Kristina Fahey and Taylor Acosta led Sonoma with eight points apiece.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED, OTTER EDITION: The Otters left their home fans smiling by taking a 60–50 Senior Night decision from Cal State Stanislaus Saturday in The Kelp Bed. Senior Ashley Morgan (Rohnert Park/Santa Rosa JC) scored 13 of her game–high 16 points in the first half to help the Otters build a 32–20 lead at the break that wouldn't be threatened. Chezla Self chipped in 10 points and eight rebounds in her final collegiate home game.
WHEN LAST WE PLAYED, SEAWOLF EDITION: Sonoma stayed close early but never recovered from a big Triton run late in the first half as UC San Diego won on its Senior Night in RIMAC Arena, 62–47. The game was still tied 12 minutes into the first period when the Tritons went on a 12–2 run that gave them the lead for good. Molly Kommer and Kristina Fahey led Sonoma with 15 and 14 points respectively.
THIS DATE IN OTTER HISTORY: The Otters blocked seven shots, tied for the fourth most in school history, en route to a 76–50 win over Cal State Stanislaus on Feb. 28, 2013.
WHAT A STEAL, TURNABOUT IS FAIR PLAY EDITION: One week after Chezla Self tied her own career–high with four steals to overtake Ashley Morgan for the team lead, Morgan posted a career–high four steals of her own in the win over Stanislaus to retake the lead. Morgan now has 43 steals, tied with Holly Holcomb's (Ventura/Buena HS) 2011 season for No. 8 on the CSUMB single season list.
For the record, Self and Holcomb each have 39 steals and need four more steals to catch Dana Andrews (2009) for a top 10 spot on that list.
LIKE A THIEF IN THE…KELP BED: Holly Holcomb collected six steals last weekend , giving her 139 for her career and moving her past Dana Andrews (133) for the No. 2 spot in the CSUMB career list. Jessica Fontenette (2010–13) owns the CSUMB career record of 183.
HOLCOMB FROM LONG RANGE: By going 1–for–3 from long range Saturday versus Cal State Stanislaus, Holly Holcomb became only the second Otter ever to reach 100 career treys. Dana Andrews holds the high water mark at 178 in a career that spanned from 2006–09.
HOLCOMB ON THE REBOUND: Holly Holcomb entered the season holding the No. 2 mark in the CSUMB career rebounding list. With 13 rebounds last weekend—bringing her total to 611—she joined Krista Herr (643 from 2005–08) as the only Otters to reach 600 career rebounds.
SHE SHOOTS, SHE SCORES: Holly Holcomb (649 points) solidified her spot at No. 3 on the CSUMB with 20 points last weekend. Dana Andrews holds the Otter record with 1,359 points.
MORGAN AND HOLCOMB ON THE REBOUND: With her 13 rebounds last week, Ashley Morgan vaulted up three spots to No. 15 on the CSUMB single season rebounding list with 148. With her 13 rebounds last week, Holly Holcomb now has 137, good for No. 18 on that list.
MORGAN NEARING TOP 20 SCORING LIST: Ashley Morgan enters the final weekend of the season with 224 points. She needs 14 points over her last two games to catch Denise Sanchez (237 in 2005) for a spot on the Otter single season top 20 list.
THE DEFENSE DOESN'T REST: Defense continues to be the staple of the Otter diet, with CSUMB entering Friday's game allowing just 60.3 points per game. The Otters entered the week ranked No. 1 in both the CCAA and the West Region and No. 26 in the nation in scoring defense.
70 IS THE ANSWER TO EVERYTHING: With apologies to Douglas Adams, the answer to everything isn't 42, it's 70. With the 70–63 win at Humboldt State on Feb. 8, CSUMB is now 32–2 when scoring 70 or more points since the 2008–09 season. Prior to the 2013 regular season finale (an 84–75 overtime loss to Chico State), the Otters hadn't scored 70 in defeat since a 85–79 loss to Cal State Stanislaus on Dec. 6, 2008.
WHY PLAY 40 MINUTES? Second halves have become all but irrelevant when the Otters lead at intermission. With Saturday's win over Stanislaus, CSUMB has won 73 of its last 77 regular season games in which it has led at halftime. Since 2008–09, the Otters have a 79–5 regular season record when leading at intermission. Included in that run was a 52–game winning streak broken when Humboldt State overcame a 32–31 on deficit Feb. 4, 2012 to win 65–51.
CLOSE, BUT NO CIGAR: The Otters dropped consecutive games by one point (47–46) at San Bernardino (Jan. 10) and two points (40–38) at UC San Diego (Jan. 11). It marked the first time ever that the Otters played consecutive games decided by a total of three points. The previous record for consecutive close games was five points, with the Otters falling at San Francisco State (55–52) and to Cal State Dominguez Hills (52–50) on Feb. 10–12, 2010.
GO OTTERS!
