Otters Secure Postseason Berth with Huge Victory at Chico

CSUMB takes down Chico State, 72-64

CHICO, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team clinched a postseason berth on the strength of a 72–64 victory over Chico State in a key CCAA road matchup at Art Acker Gym on Saturday afternoon.

CSUMB built momentum early and never trailed by more than a few possessions, taking a 21–17 edge after the first quarter and maintaining a competitive stance throughout the first half.

In the second half, the Otters showcased their depth and poise, outscoring the Wildcats down the stretch with timely baskets, continued defensive pressure and a collective effort that paid dividends.

Junior Jennifer Moreno Ortiz led the offensive attack with a career-night performance, pouring in 25 points on 9-of-21 shooting, including three triples, while also contributing on the glass and in the flow of the offense.

Sophomore Leah Sarabia backed up the effort with 19 points and seven rebounds. Senior Cheyanne Whitfield added 12 points on efficient shooting, including two three-pointers.

The CSUMB bench made key contributions as well, with Aliyah Young adding five points and Janelle Peña chipping in four in support of the starters.

The Otters shot 42-percent from the field. Defensively, Monterey Bay held Chico State in check in the final frame, limiting the Wildcats to 14 points in the fourth quarter and forcing turnovers that led to transition points.

The victory secured a postseason berth as the Otters will be the No. 6 seed and will face Cal State LA at Noon on Thursday, March 6.
