POMONA, Calif. – The No. 6-seeded Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team dropped its quarterfinal contest to No. 3 seed Cal State LA in the CCAA Tournament Thursday afternoon at Kellogg Arena on the campus of Cal Poly Pomona.
Janelle Peña led the way for CSUMB, finishing in double figures with 11 points on 3-of-6 shooting and a perfect 5-of-5 performance from the free-throw line.
Cheyanne Whitfield provided a strong spark off the bench, contributing nine points and five rebounds in 18 minutes of action, while
Jennifer Moreno Ortiz added seven points.
The Otters struggled to find their rhythm early as the Golden Eagles jumped out to a 24–12 lead after the first quarter. Monterey Bay tightened up defensively in the second period, but a difficult third quarter—where the Otters were held without a field goal—allowed Cal State LA to pull away for good.
On the boards,
Leah Sarabia led the team with seven rebounds, helping CSUMB stay competitive in the rebounding battle (44–41 in favor of CSULA).
Riley Walls and
Aajah Slocum each chipped in five rebounds apiece.
The Otters finished the season 14-14 overall, their best season since the 2012-13 campaign.
