Ashton Palmer led CSUMB's strong defense.
HAYWARD, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team played its best game of the season in the WWPA conference opener in Saturday's overtime 11-10 victory over Cal State East Bay at Pioneer Pool.
CSUMB's team dynamics looked better than ever with a solid defense to start things off.
Freshmen
Adrianna Craft and
Cami Kellogg had the first goals of the game igniting the offense for the Otters.
The Otters controlled of the game until the third quarter when the Pioneers took its first lead of the game at 7-6.
Samantha Whitecotton and
Bree Hogervorst each put one away to gain the lead once again early in the fourth. CSUEB answered with one to tie the game and force two 3-minute overtime quarters.
The Otter defense did not allow a Pioneer goal in the first overtime period while Craft nabbed her second goal of the game to put CSUMB up 10-9.
Junior
Nicole Koorndyk's strong side shot found the back of the net proved to be the game winner with 2:26 remaining.
Hogervorst led the Otters with three goals followed by Craft and Whitecotton with two a piece.
Keeper
Amanda Jennings had a total of 19 saves for the day.
The Otters will take a two week break before hosting Concordia Irvine at the Otter Tank on Feb. 28 at 1 p.m.
