SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay junior outside hitter
Jessica Malcolm (Lodi HS) capped her junior season in record–breaking fashion last weekend and was rewarded for that effort by earning both CCAA and Sports Import/AVCA NCAA Division II Player of the Week honors for the week ending Nov. 16.
"'I'm proud of the steps Jessica took this season towards being her best. Her commitment to our technique and trust in our system made a major impact on her" says CSUMB Head Coach
Jody Garry (@JodyGarry). "I was a thorn in her side but I was happy to play the role, as I always wished someone would have done for me as a player. With her spring and summer commitment I have no doubt she'll reach the goals she set for herself her senior year."
Malcolm began the weekend with a bang, pounding out 22 kills in a sweep of Cal Poly Pomona. That broke 9–year–old CSUMB record of 21 kills in a 3–set match established by Brittany Etchings in 2005. She followed that performance by notching 20 kills in a 3–set loss to UC San Diego the next night. Making her the first player in CSUMB history to record at least 20 kills in a 3–set match three times.
For the record, Malcolm also owns the CSUMB record for kills in a 4–set match with 27 in a win at Notre Dame de Namur on Sept. 13, 2013.
Malcolm ended the week averaging 7.0 kills per set while hitting .305. She added 10 digs in the win over Cal Poly to complete her seventh double–double of the season.
Malcolm becomes the second Otter ever to earn Sports Import/AVCA National Player of the Week honors. Rheann Fall was the first back in September of 2010. She is the first Otter to earn CCAA Player of the Week recognition since
Julia Ashen grabbed the award for the week of Sept. 8, 2013.
GO OTTERS!
