Fast Start Not Enough In The City

MB hold SFSU to nine points in first set before Gators rally

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay got off to a torrid start it couldn't maintain in a 9–25, 25–15, 25–22, 25–18 loss at San Francisco State Friday evening in SFSU's SFFCU Gym.

Freshmen Juliette D'Eliseo (Carlsbad/Sage Creek HS) and Zoe Haan (Phoenix/Sunnyslope HS) led the Otter offense with 10 kills apiece. D'Eliseo completed the double-double with a team-leading 16 digs.

Things looked promising for Otter fans early as CSUMB gradually gained separation before finishing a dominating first frame with a 7–0 run to take an early lead. The Gators turned the tables in set two, finishing it with a 12–3 flourish to even the match.

CSUMB led throughout the third set until the Gators finally caught up at 19–19, then held on to go up 2–1. A 9–1 run midway through the fourth set put SFSU in control to close the match.

In addition to D'Eliseo and Haan, junior Lilly Bandle (Jackson, Wisc./West Bend East HS) continued her torrid net play with a match-high six blocks. Junior outside hitter Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) added 14 digs and four aces.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… a Grace Witcher kill stopped a late Otter rally and start a match-ending 5–0 run for the Gators.

HOW LOW CAN YOU GO? The Otters held San Francisco State to nine points in the opening set. Those were the second fewest points ever allowed by the Otters in sets 1–4 since the NCAA went away from 15-point, side-out scoring in 2001. The Otter opponent record for fewest points was eight in a sweep of Hawaii-Hilo during the 2017 season.

BANDLE BLOCKING CRACKS TOP 10… Lilly Bandle collected six block assists Friday at S.F. State to vault all the way from No. 16 to No. 8 on the Otter single-season block assist list with 68. She needs 20 over the final three matches to match Victoria Clardy's CSUMB record of 88 set in 2015.

BANDLE CRACKS ANOTHER TOP 10… With her six blocks Friday at S.F. State, Lilly Bandle moved up from No. 13 to No. 8 on the CSUMB single-season total blocks list with 86. She needs 18 more over her final three matches to match the CSUMB record of 104 set by DJ Gresham-Ryder in 2013.

COUNTDOWN TO 300… Freshman Zoe Haan collected 10 kills Friday in The City to move to within 15 of 300. She is looking to become just the 10th different Otter ever to reach 300 kills in a single season.

DILLEY CLOSING IN ON 600 DIGS… Senior Mia Dilley had eight digs Friday at S.F. State, bringing her career total 588. That mark ranks No. 19 on the Otter career digs list. Amongst 2-year players, only Jennifer Holda (901 from 2004–05) ever had more in an Otter uniform.
