OTTER SPOTLIGHT: Zoe Haan

Get to know the freshman outside hitter

October 31, 2025

SEASIDE, Calif. — Zoe Haan has always been passionate about volleyball, and from a young age, she dreamed of playing the sport in California. Originally from Peoria, Arizona, Haan was able to realize that dream when she decided to attend Cal State Monterey Bay.

"I always wanted to play by the ocean, and Monterey Bay is one of the most beautiful places," the freshman outside hitter said. "I knew right away that CSUMB was where I wanted to continue playing volleyball."

Beyond the stunning location, Haan was particularly drawn to the coaching staff and her teammates. Her first conversation with Head Coach Courtney Materazzi left an immediate impression.

"I instantly loved her and how she coaches and runs her practices," Haan said. "The girls on the team were so nice and welcoming to me and made me feel at home when I first visited the school."

Since arriving on campus, Haan has embraced the opportunity to play high-level volleyball in a competitive environment. Her teammates have been instrumental in making this season enjoyable, and she feels fortunate to be part of such a talented group.

"Coach Courtney and Coach Derrick (Moore) have been such amazing coaches," Haan said. "They support me so hard and believe in me, which makes me a better athlete and gives me confidence."

Haan's hard work and dedication were recognized early in the season when she earned a spot on the all-tournament team at the Otter Invitational.
That achievement gave her a sense of fulfillment and reinforced her desire to have an important role on the team.

One of Haan's main goals this year is to become a confident and reliable player for her team. She wants to be someone her teammates can rely on in tough and tight situations while maintaining a strong presence on the court.

"I feel like I've done a good job in reaching these goals this year by being someone my teammates and coaches can trust and rely on when we're in a tight match," Haan said. "I want to continue being that person my team can rely on, having a louder voice on the court, and being more confident in hard situations."

Haan's transition from high school to college, both on and off the court, has been smoother than she anticipated.
With fewer classes and a more flexible schedule, she has been able to focus on her studies and manage her time effectively.

"I like being on my own schedule, and I feel like I have been able to focus and learn more in these classes in college," Haan said.

Looking ahead, Haan has ambitious goals beyond her time at CSUMB. She wants to stay in California and pursue a career as a forensic scientist, a dream she is determined to turn into reality.
Additionally, she wants to continue playing volleyball and plans to coach at a club or high school level.

"Volleyball is such an important part of my life and has been since I was nine, so I want to keep it in my life after I'm done playing in college," Haan said.

Haan's journey at CSUMB has been filled with growth, achievements, and unforgettable moments. Her passion for the sport, combined with the support of her coaches and teammates, has propelled her towards becoming the confident and reliable player she aspires to be.
