Volleyball Trio Named Academic All-District

Maya Cann, Malia Peterson and Malia Thorne earn the honor

December 16, 2025

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay placed a trio of juniors on the Academic All-District Volleyball Team announced by the College Sports Communicators (CSC) Tuesday. Setter Maya Cann (Chico HS/Feather River College), outside hitter Malia Peterson (Redondo Union HS) and middle blocker Malia Thorne (Newport Harbor HS) all earned their first selection to the prestigious team.

They are the first Otter volleyball players to earn the honor since CSUMB hall of famer Julia Ashen earned consecutive nods in 2013 and 2014.

"Congratulations to Malia, Maya and Malia; we're so proud of them," says CSUMB Head Coach Courtney Materazzi. "They put in so much time and effort to prioritize academics while valuing the opportunity to play volleyball as well. To see them recognized for these efforts is truly appreciated."

Cann, who carries a 4.0 grade point average as a biology major, was CSUMB's top setter in her first season as an Otter. She finished 2025 ranked sixth in the CCAA in assists at 6.88 apg.

Thorne, a business administration major, has compiled an impressive 3.98 gpa. She needs just six more blocks to move up to No. 25 on the Otter career blocks list. She already ranks No. 22 for career block solos in Otter history.

Peterson, also a business administration major in her third season at CSUMB, carries a 3.54 gpa. She'll enter her senior season needing just 10 kills to break into the Otter top 25 for career kills.
