SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay's 76–69 men's basketball win over Humboldt State proved to be an inside job. Post players
Greg Anderson (Murietta/Palomar College) and
Kris Gallop (Vallejo/Los Medanos College) combined for 25 points and 25 rebounds to lead the Otters to their second consecutive CCAA win Friday night in The Kelp Bed.
Gallop made his 24th consecutive start and pulled down a career–high 14 rebounds. Anderson, meanwhile, came off the bench and recorded his first double–double with 18 points and 11 boards.
As it turns out, Anderson likes the view from the bench. After starting the first six games, Anderson has come off the bench the last two, recording back–to–back career scoring highs (12 and 18 points). He's been nearly flawless in the process, going 12–for–16 from the floor in leading the Otters to wins over Cal State East Bay and Humboldt State.
The Otters needed every ounce of that effort to subdue the Lumberjacks in a game featuring eight ties and 13 lead changes, including eight in the second half alone. CSUMB never lead by more than eight points. Humboldt's biggest lead was four early in the first half.
After the Otters went ahead 58–50 with just over eight minutes remaining, Humboldt made its final push, using a 12–2 run to take its last lead at 62–60 inside of five minutes to play. But the Otters responded with an Anderson 3–pointer from the wing and a pair of
Ryan Nitz (Rancho Cucamonga/Chaffey College) free throws on their next two possessions to retake the lead.
They made 6–of–8 from the line in the final 39 seconds to hold Humboldt at bay.
In addition to Gallop and Anderson,
Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) chipped in 15 points and a career–high five assists. Nitz played through early foul trouble to reach double figures for the eighth time with 13 points, helping CSUMB improve to 4–4 overall and 2–3 in the CCAA.
David Howard led four players in double figures with 18 points for Humboldt (5–6, 0–5).
CSUMB concludes its 3–game homestand Saturday night by hosting defending CCAA Champion Cal Poly Pomona for a 7:30 p.m. tip–off.
GO OTTERS!
