Otters return home February 1 to face Santa Clara

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. – The last day of competition at the UCSB Invitational was a rough one for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team as the Otters fell to No. 7 UC Irvine (23-1) and No. 14 Cal State Northridge (15-2).

The UCI Anteaters took an early lead in the first quarter with three goals. Freshman Bree Hogervorst (Ramona/Mountain Valley Academy) chipped in the one and only goal during the second quarter to get the Otters on the scoreboard. The second half was no different with attempts coming from all over but none broke through the strong Anteaters defense.

The Otters stepped up against Northridge with the Otters taking a 1-0 lead in the first quarter off a six-on-five power play goal by Hogervorst. The Matadors answered back with five quick goals before the end of the period.

CSUMB's defense shined in the third quarter, allowing only two goals.  Junior Samantha Whitecotton (Roseville/Woodcreek HS)  netted CSUMB's second goal on a five-meter penalty shot. Six games in three days proved to be too much for the Otters as Northridge extended its lead with four goals in the final quarter.

The Otters return to action next Saturday February 1 against Santa Clara at 1pm at the Otter Tank.
