Otter senior Julie Cooper and the CSUMB women's water polo team head to the Santa Clara Tournament this weekend.

CSUMB will play a couple important conference games this weekend

SEASIDE, CALIF.-- This weekend the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team makes their final trip of the regular season as they head to the Santa Clara Invitational. Each team they face will be a WWPA in what is a preview of the WWPA Tournament to be played from April 26-28 in Santa Clara.

"Our WWPA win this past weekend over East Bay accomplished a couple of things,' says Otter Head Coach Gary Figueroa. 'We moved up in the standings and more importantly we continued to build momentum."

"Our goal this weekend at the Santa Clara Tournament is to approach each game one at a time,' says Figueroa. 'There's good value in being able to play teams that you've seen on a regular basis."

Play begins on Saturday April 6 with a 1:00pm tilt versus Loyola Marymount. Later that day CSUMB will face Colorado State in a WWPA game. On Sunday April 7 the Otters will take on UC San Diego in a WWPA game at 10:40am. They'll finish out the tourney with a 4:00pm game against host Santa Clara.

SCOUTING SANTA CLARA TOURNEY: This weekend's slate features the top four teams in the WWPA. UC San Diego is undefeated with a 3-0 record in conference play. Overall the four opponents are 16-5 in WWPA matches. Nationally LMU is ranked No. 11 while UCSD is No. 15.

LAST MEETING: This weekends most important games are the WWPA contests versus UC San Diego and Colorado State. The Otters last saw UCSD in a quarterfinal match at last year's WWPA tournament. An early 4-2 advantage propelled by three Nikki Smart goals wasn't enough at CSUMB fell 10-9. The Otters last played Colorado State on April 13, 2012 at The Otter Tank. Otter goalie Paige Robinson made 18 saves to help CSUMB earn a 14-9 victory.

LAST DIP IN THE POOL: In an important WWPA contest against Cal State East Bay, the Otters used a balanced attack to defeat the Pioneers 10-9 at The Otter Tank. CSUMB was led by Julie Cooper and Jackie Walters four goals a piece. Amanda Jennings made 14 saves.

ESPN STUDENT-ATHLETE OF WEEK:  Sophomore All-Around player Hayley Burke earned ESPN Central Coast 630 Student-Athlete of the Week Honors for the week of April  1. Highlighted by strong defensive play, Burke helped the Otters to a WWPA victory over Cal State East Bay on Saturday. It is water polo's second athlete of the week honor this season.

KAP7 PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Seniors Jackie Walters and Kylie Fields were named KAP7 Co-Players of the Week by the WWPA for the week of Mar. 31. Walters had seven goals over the weekend while Fields had six, including five versus Concordia-Irvine.

OTTER LEADERS: Jackie Walters leads the Otters in goals this season with 59. Alex Tyrrell  leads the team with 31 assists while Julie Cooper has a team-high 52 steals. In goal, Amanda Jennings has recorded 197 saves.

MORE THAN 32 MINUTES OF PLAY?: The Otters began their season with a dramatic 13-12 OT loss to rival Sonoma State. CSUMB didn't play an overtime game during the entire 2012 season. The last overtime match you ask? A 12-10 win over Cal State Bakersfield at the WWPA Tournament on May 1, 2011.

SAVED BY THE JENNINGS: Sophomore goalie Amanda Jennings continues to impress in the goal this season. Her 12.70 saves per match average is good for first in the WWPA. CSUMB's  12 saves per game also ranks first in the conference.
