Fields scores hat trick as Otters win season series over Pioneers

SANTA CLARA, CALIF.—For some, the WWPA Championships is the last opportunity to showcase exceptional ability to play water polo. The seniors of the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team took advantage on Saturday afternoon, beating Cal State East Bay 8-3 at Sullivan Aquatic Center in Santa Clara.

Each of CSUMB's eight goals was scored by the collective effort of five seniors. Kylie Fields (San Jose, Calif./Pioneer HS) had three, Julie Cooper (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore HS) scored twice, while Alex Tyrrell (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore HS), Jackie Walters (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla HS) and Christina Keller (Agoura Hills, Calif./Agoura HS) each added a goal apiece.

This game was controlled by the Otters early. Three unanswered goals before the midpoint of the first staked CSUMB to an early 3-0 lead. The score stood at 4-1 after the first.

The defense held well again throughout the second, only allowing one Pioneer goal. CSUMB led 6-2 heading to the break.

Aided by four saves by Amanda Jennings (Oakley, Calif./Freedom HS) , the WWPA leader in saves-per-game, CSUMB shutout CSUEB in the third. Walters scored her team-high 67th goal of the season just before the quarter's end to widen the lead to 8-2.

The Otters cruised from there to an 8-3 victory. The win earns CSUMB a spot in the fifth-place game versus Sonoma State. First sprint for that contest is at 11:00am tomorrow.
