Strong defense kept the Otters within striking distance on Friday afternoon.

CSUMB outscores SCU in final three quarters

SANTA CLARA, CALIF.—An attempt at a second consecutive trip to the WWPA semifinals fell short for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team. An early four-goal advantage was enough for SCU en route to an 8-5 quarterfinal win at Sullivan Aquatics Center on Friday afternoon.

The Otters were led by Julie Cooper (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore HS) who scored twice. Amanda Jennings (Oakley, Calif./Freedom HS) made 12 saves.

After falling behind 4-0 early, CSUMB began to mount a comeback. Good defense held SCU scoreless in the second, while Cooper got the Otters on the board.

A pair of sophomore's aided the Otter rally in the third as Haley Burke (San Diego, Calif./Patrick Henry HS) and Jessica Laurence (Danville, Calif./Monte Vista HS) found the back of the net. Cooper scored as time expired to bring CSUMB within two at 6-4.

The Broncos extended their lead midway through the fourth on an Elizabeth Anderson goal to take a 7-4 lead. The separation was too much as SCU earned the 8-5 win.

The Otters will take on Cal State East Bay tomorrow morning at 11:00am. The winner earns the right to play for fifth place at the tournament.
