Clutch play down the stretch nets victory over Bucknell

BAKERSFIELD, CALIF.— The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team split their first day at the RoadRunner Invitational on Saturday afternoon. CSUMB's day started with a 15-6 loss to No. 20 Pacifc. The Otters would recover in game two with a 13-11 victory over Bucknell University.

CSUMB was lead by Jackie Walters (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla HS) six goals on the afternoon. Amanda Jennings (Oakley, Calif./Freedom HS) made 15 saves.

Game 1: No. 20 Pacific 15, CSUMB 6

The Tigers proved to be as good if not better then their advertised national ranking this in the afternoon match with the Otters. Early it appeared as though CSUMB would keep it competitive. Alex Tyrrell (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore HS) scored the first goal of the game after 2:48 of play.

UOP would counter back with three goals of their own to lead 3-1 after the first quarter. In the second quarter the two teams combined for eight goals. Walters scored two of her three goals in the game in the second.

Ultimately, UOP's offense would prove to be too much. Led by Malena Prlain and Brydie Pye's four goals each the Tigers earned a 15-6 win.

Game 2: CSUMB 13, Bucknell 11

Otter Head Coach Gary Figueroa has emphasized the importance of playing a team game in order to win. CSUMB did just that in a closely contended contest with Bucknell University.

The first half was a true back and forth battle with neither team able to lead by more than one. Julie Cooper (Wildomar, Calif./Elsinore HS), Kylie Fields (San Jose, Calif./Foothill CC), and Walters each scored twice before the break.

The third quarter is where this game was won. A stingy Otters defense allowed the Bisons to score just once while the offense scored four times.

Tyrrell had two goals for CSUMB in the third. From there, the Otters answered Bison attempts at a comeback on their way to a 13-11 win.
