Otter sophomore Ashton Palmer scored two goals and had one block in Saturday morning's victory over Cal State San Bernardino.
SEASIDE, Calif.— It didn't take long for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team to get a strong hold on Saturday morning's game versus Cal State San Bernardino at The Otter Tank. Seven different Otters scored in route to a 13-7 victory.
The win snapped a three-game losing streak for CSUMB (4-6, 0-2 WWPA). CSUSB (1-13,0-0 WWPA) suffered its second loss of the weekend.
The scoring began just :13 into the game when Otter senior
Jackie Walters (San Diego, Calif./La Jolla HS) netted a goal on CSUMB's first possession. The Otters controlled the opening quarter with three goals and a nullifying defense.
“It was important for us to reestablish ourselves on defense, that's our main focus,” says Otter Head Coach
Gary Figueroa.
While the defense did its part, the offense had a stellar day as well. Walters lead the team with four goals while fellow senior
Kylie Fields (San Jose, Calif./Foothill College) chipped in three. It was all CSUMB at the break with the Otters holding a commanding 11-1 lead.
“Our offense started to show signs of what we can do. We moved the ball and were able to catch and shoot,” says Figueroa.
With a 13-2 lead and the game already in hand after three quarters of play, CSUMB used the majority of its roster. Freshman
Sydney Nguyen (Cottonwood Heights, Utah/Brighton) made an impact with two steals in the fourth quarter.
CSUMB returns to action next weekend as they travel to Bakersfield for the Roadrunner Invitational. There they'll face four opponents in two days, including No. 4 Arizona State. CSUMB's first match is on Friday, March 9 versus University of the Pacific, first sprint is scheduled for 10:15 a.m.
