SEASIDE, Calif.-- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team has had work to do in the pool coming off of two losses over the weekend.

"I think we're turning the corner," says Otters Head Coach Gary Figueroa. "While the score may not show it, we played more as a team at East Bay. We need to use these recent losses as a learning lesson."

This weekend the Otters will play a single game at WWPA opponent Santa Clara. First sprint is scheduled for 9:00am.

SCOUTING SANTA CLARA: Since sweeping at the CSUMB mini-tournament held on Feb. 2, Santa Clara lost four consecutive games. These however were against highly ranked competition, including No. 7 San Diego State. The Broncos recovered with a narrow 9-8 victory over Cal State East Bay on Sunday Feb. 17. Redshirt freshman Julia Peters leads SCU with 18 goals on the season.

LAST MEETING: CSUMB and Santa Clara played before a standing room only crowd at The Otter Tank on Feb. 2. Santa Clara jumped out to an early 4-2 lead after one quarter. CSUMB tied it at six all in the third quarter only to see SCU rally for two goals and the win. Senior Jackie Walters lead CSUMB with three goals.

LAST DIP IN THE POOL: Playing at WWPA rival Cal State East Bay, the Otters struggled early and were unable to recover. The Pioneers rode a 7-3 haltime lead in route to a 14-7 victory on Saturday Feb. 16. Senior Christina Keller had a team-high two goals. Walters scored her team-leading 16th goal of  the season.

ESPN STUDENT-ATHLETE OF WEEK:  Senior center Jackie Walters earned ESPN Central Coast 630 Player of the Week Honors for the week of Jan. 20. Highlighted by four goals in a victory over Azusa Pacific, Walters led the Otters to a Saturday sweep in Fresno over APU and Fresno Pacific.

OTTERS WEARING RED: Five Otter freshman are redshirting during the 2013 regular season. Among them are: Angel Arellano, Rachel Brindley, Jen Goforth, Kanani Hocking and Bree Hogervorst.

MORE THAN 32 MINUTES OF PLAY?: The Otters began their season with a dramatic 13-12 OT loss to rival Sonoma State. CSUMB didn't play an overtime game during the entire 2012 season. The last overtime match you ask? A 12-10 win over Cal State Bakersfield at the WWPA Tournament on May 1, 2011.

UNDERWATER THIEF: Otter senior Julie Cooper has had a knack for taking things that aren't hers this season. Cooper's 2.87 steals per game this season rank first in the WWPA. Overall she ranks second in the conference for total steals with 23.

SAVED BY THE JENNINGS: Otter sophomore goalie Amanda Jennings is among WWPA leaders in saves this season. Her 87 saves are good for fourth in the conference.

ROAD WARRIORS: CSUMB will have to win on the road often this season to remain competitive. Of their remaining 20 regular season contests, only five will be played at The Otter Tank.

OTTERS ON TV: For the first time in program history, CSUMB water polo home games will be telvised on the campus cable station Channel 71. Fans can also follow the action live on OtterAthletics.com.
