SCOUTING THE BRONCOS: After rolling to eight consecutive wins to open the season — and climbing to No. 6 in the NABC Division II Top 25 — the Broncos stumbled a bit at home last weekend. They needed a pair of Mitchel Anderson free throws with five second left to hold off last–place UC San Diego, 52–51, on Jan. 3. In a battle for first place two days later, San Bernardino handed the Broncos their first loss, 67–63. Anderson leads an efficient Bronco offense at 15.1 points and 3.3 assists per game. He's also the team's top rebounder at 8.0 rpg. Junior swingman Terrence Drisdom adds 12.3 ppg.

WHEN LAST WE MET: Like it did for every other team (Pomona entered the game ranked No. 2 nationally in scoring defense), the Broncos' match–up zone created headaches for the Otters in a 64–35 Cal Poly victory on Feb. 10, 2012 in The Kelp Bed. The Otters led 11–10 and trailed just 29–20 at the break. But the Bronco defense asserted itself down the stretch, holding CSUMB to three points over the final 10:19 of regulation to pull away. Mitchell Anderson led both teams with a 16–point, 11–rebound double–double. No Otter scored in double figures.

WHEN LAST WE PLAYED: The Otters uncharacteristically struggled from long range and Cal State L.A. uncharacteristically shot well from there in a 75–62 Golden Eagle win on Jan. 5 in L.A. The Otters went into halftime trailing 43–32 and, despite never trailing by more than 15 points, couldn't get closer than seven the rest of the way. Freshman guard Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) led all scorers with 21 points.

THE CHILIAD CLUB: Brandon Ward (Riverside/Woodcrest HS) is now pounding on the door of CSUMB's exclusive Chiliad Club. His 19 points versus East Bay on Dec. 30 vaulted him from sixth to fourth place with 965 career points. He needs 10 to become the fourth player in Otter history to score 1,000 career points. Matt Dalhamer owns the CSUMB career record with 1,075 points from 1999–2001.

DOING THE MATH: To save everybody the bother of doing the math, Brandon Ward needs to average 5.4 points per game over the final 16 regular season games to become CSUMB's career scoring leader.

BETTER THAN AVERAGE: And, in case anybody is wondering, Brandon Ward enters the weekend averaging 11.5 points per game on the season and 10.9 ppg for his career. The latter mark ranks No. 8 in the CSUMB record book.

REVVING THEIR ENGINES: The Otter offense has been strutting its stuff through the first third of the season to the tune of a 77.3 scoring average. That mark would rank No. 5 on the CSUMB all–time list. The 2006–07 Otters averaged 83.2 ppg to set the school standard.

A LITTLE SOMETHING IN RESERVE: The Otter bench more than held its own in the Dec. 15 win over Academy of Art, outscoring the Urban Knight reserves 45–6. In fact, the Otter reserves have outscored their counterparts in 12 of 13 games this season (Oklahoma Panhandle edged the Otters 37–34 in that department on Nov. 17). The CSUMB bench has outscored its opposing bench by 506–290, an average of 16.6 points per game.

ON THE BLOCKS: Junior forward Kris Gallop (Vallejo/Los Medanos College) posted a team season–high four blocks Jan. 5 at Cal State L.A. That mark is tied for the No. 4 spot in the CSUMB record book and were the most blocks since Andrew Castro blocked five shots in a win at Cal Poly SLO on Nov. 18, 2010. Andy Cannon set the CSUMB record with six blocks at Cal State Hayward (now East Bay) on Jan. 22, 2002.

ROAD SWEET ROAD: By defeating Cal State Dominguez Hills in Carson Friday night, the Otters picked up their first road win since they beat Cal State L.A. 73–69 on Feb. 12, 2011. It snapped an 0–18 skid in away games.

MINI STREAKING: CSUMB's win at Dominguez Hills was its third consecutive victory: its longest win streak since it won three straight from Jan. 29–Feb. 4, 2011. With a win in L.A., the Otters would have their longest streak since Rob Bishop guided the 2008–09 Otters to a school NCAA level record seven consecutive wins from Nov. 18–Dec. 12, 2008. The all–levels CSUMB record is nine in a row set from Jan. 30–Feb. 27, 1999

SO CLOSE… The Otters just missed scoring their most points in a regulation conference game during the Rob Bishop era by hanging 98 points on Cal State East Bay Dec. 30. The high water mark is 99 points in a 99–88 win at Cal State Stanislaus on Jan. 30, 2009. The 98 points were the third most scored in a regulation CCAA game in Otter history, trailing only the aforementioned game at Stanislaus and 107 points (also at Stanislaus) on Jan. 19, 2007.

DOUBLE TROUBLE: By scoring 180 points versus Academy of Art (82) and Cal State East Bay (98), the Otters set a school record for points in consecutive regulation wins over NCAA Division II competition. The 2006–07 Otters scored 188 points in consecutive games versus Chico State (99) and Cal State Stanislaus (89), but fell in the Stanislaus game, 96–89.

WORKING OVERTIME: One area where the Otters have excelled in the Rob Bishop Era is in overtime. CSUMB was 2–0 in overtime during the 2011–12 season and 6–1 overall when playing bonus basketball under Bishop.

THE WARD GIVETH… Brandon Ward enters this week's action with 219 career assists, good for No. 2 in the CSUMB record book. D'Shon Cannon owns the top spot with 371 assists from 2006–08.

…AND THE WARD TAKETH AWAY: Brandon Ward continues his quest for the CSUMB career steals record, entering the Cal Poly Pomona game tied with Steve Monreal for the No. 4 spot with 79 steals. Next up is D'Shon Cannon in third place with with 85 steals. Joe Mitchell holds the record with 91 steals.

LARGE MARGINS, HOME EDITION: The season–opening 104–52 win over Pacifica University set a CSUMB record for largest margin of victory (52 points) in an Otter home win. Last night, CSUMB's 78–58 win over Colorado Christian was the largest margin of victory in a road game during the Road Bishop era at CSUMB. The previous record was 19 points in an 83–64 win at Cal State East Bay on Feb. 3, 2011.

LARGE MARGINS, ROAD EDITION: Nov. 16th's 78–58 win over Colorado Christian was the largest margin of victory (20 points) in a road game in the Rob Bishop era of Otter basketball.

NOW THAT'S SMARTS: After leading the conference with three members of the CCAA All–Academic team in 2011, the Otter men's basketball team built on that success by placing four players on that team in 2012: James Albert, Geoff McIntosh, Brandon Ward and Troy Watkins. CSUMB's seven CCAA All–Academic team members over the last two seasons are tops among the 12 conference schools. Ward, in fact, is a three–year member of the CCAA All–Academic team.

FERTIG NAMED TO ALL–TOURNAMENT TEAM: Freshman guard Alex Fertig (Fresno/Buchanan HS) picked up the first piece of hardware for the Otters this season, earning All–Tournament recognition at the GCI Alaska Invitational. He averaged 18.7 points per game over the weekend, including CSUMB's first 20–point games of the season with 24 vs. Colorado Christian and 21 vs. Oklahoma Panhandle State.

SIT THIS ONE OUT: Freshman Tim Darkwa will practice with the team but is expected to redshirt the 2012–13 season.
