UC Davis rides four point first quarter lead to win

DAVIS, Calif.—For three quarters of play, the Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team played goal for goal with the nation's No.13 team in the country. Unfortunately, UC Davis outscored the Otters 6-2 in the first quarter on their way to a 12-7 victory at Schaal Aquatics Center Saturday afternoon.

UC Davis playing in their season-opener, now stands at 1-0. CSUMB falls to 2-2.

This affair was different then the last time these two teams met On Jan. 29, 2011 when UC Davis ran away with a 20-7 victory.

“It was quite different from that game," says Head Coach Gary Figueroa. "We never had a chance last time, this game was competitive. We're still making too many mistakes to compete with these top teams. If we clean those up we can play with pretty much anybody.”

Senior Jackie Walters led the Otters with three goals. Sam Whitecotton, Kylie Fields, Julie Cooper and Jessica Laurence all chipped in a goal a piece.

“We're starting to get other players stepping up in different areas. Everyone was playing as a team,” says Figueroa.

UC Davis was lead by Carmen Eggert who scored five goals on the day.

CSUMB hosts their home opener at the Otter Tank next Saturday, Feb. 2 versus Santa Clara at 10:00am. CSUMB also faces Fresno Pacifc at 4:00pm.
