BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – Freshman
Jeff Owen (Clovis, Calif./Clovis East HS) retired the side five of the seven innings as Cal State Monterey Bay (24-21,17-18 CCAA) completed a sweep Saturday over Cal State Dominguez Hills. The Otters won game one 13-5 and followed it with a 10-1 victory in the nightcap.
Senior
Danny Nelson (Morgan Hill, Calif./San Jose CC) homered and drove in five runs to lead CSUMB at the plate. After drawing five walks, Nelson moves into the top spot in walks in a season by raising his total to 28.
Junior
Tommy George (Elk Grove HS) notched his NCAA leading eighth triple in the first game and two singles in the second to extend his hitting streak to 17 games. This ties him with
Matt DeJesus (2007) on the longest hitting streak in program history.
After taking their second bye weekend, the Otters will conclude the 2012 regular season at Sonoma State May 4-6.
Game 1: CSUMB 13, CSUDH 5
A five-run first inning set the tone for the day for the Otters. CSUMB's lone hit of the inning came on junior
Gino Valletta's (San Jose, Calif./San Jose CC) 3 RBI double off the top of the left center wall.
The bottom of the fourth began with back-to-back walks. George then hit a 2 RBI triple and scored on a wild pitch to make it 8-0 CSUMB.
After five scoreless innings by starter
Jordan Helmkamp (Aliso Viejo, Calif./Saddleback College), CSUDH's Matthew Young homered to leadoff the sixth.
Pinch hitters
Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif./Branham HS) and
Ronnie Fhurong (Hollister, Calif./San Benito HS) hit consecutive doubles to start the Otters side. Senior
Jared DeCastro (Torrance, Calif./LA Harbor College) delivered a RBI single to raise CSUMB lead to 10-1.
Both teams posted three runs in the seventh with the Toros scoring on three hits and a CSUMB error.
Nelson hit a two-run bomb over the left field wall and Fhurong hit his second RBI double of the game.
CSUDH's Drew Rodela went 3-for-4 with a homer in the eighth
Helmkamp (4-1) gave up four runs (three earned) on nine hits with five strikeouts and no walks over 6 2/3 innings. Reliever
Jonas Noack (San Diego, Calif./UOP) relinquished one run on two hits in his 2 1/3 innings of work.
Game 2: CSUMB 10, CSUDH 1
Owen tossed a 1-hit gem in his second complete game of 2012. He retired the side in the first three innings. CSUDH's lone hit was a single in the fourth inning.
The Otters once again jumped out quick against the Toros, scoring four runs in their first chance. Junior
Jason Merjano's (San Ramon, Calif./Sierra College) highlighted the inning with a two-run homer, his fourth of the season.
CSUMB added three more runs in the second and single runs in the third, fourth and sixth.
The Toros prevented a shutout with Sako Chapjian's sacrifice fly in the sixth that scored Young.
