SEASIDE, Calif. - The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team will have a quiet week only playing one game on Saturday, March 10. The Otters will head up the Bay to take on conference foe Cal State East Bay. CSUMB will return to the Otter Tank to host UC Santa Cruz on March 17.
WHEN WE LAST MET CAL STATE EAST BAY: The Otters dropped an 11-6 decision to the Pioneers at the Otter Tank after an overtime victory over Concordia-Irvine. Both teams had five athletes scoring one or more goals. CSUMB goalie Christina Vournas had a breakout performance knocking down 11 shots.
ABOUT LAST WEEK: The Otters started their six game road trip off on the right foot with two victories at Cal State San Bernardino. CSUMB's first game of the trip was a focus for the Otters, being a conference opponent. The Otters continued south to the Posada Royale Tournament hosted by Cal Lutheran for the remainder of the weekend and split each afternoon, finishing the weekend with a 4-2 winning record.
CSUMB STUDENT-ATHLETE OF THE WEEK: The Otters three-day, 4-2 overall record was in part due to senior
Nikki Smart's (Clovis/Buchanan HS) performance. Leading the way for the Otters by scoring a total 26 goals, she is this week's ESPN 630 Student-Athlete of the Week after bringing her season total to 68 goals scored individually.
OTTER PLAYMAKER: Junior
Jackie Walters has been the team leader in assists so far this season, compiling a total 32 respectively. Walters recorded a single game season-high of four assists twice this season (Santa Clara on Feb. 4 and Claremont on March 2 @CSUSB).
