CSUMB Swept by Cal State Stanislaus

Otters struggle against Warriors with first series sweep since 2010.

BOX SCORE 1 | BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team suffered its first series sweep in two years after falling in both games of Sunday's twinbill, 5-3 and 6-3, to the Cal State Stanislaus Warriors.
 
Junior right fielder Tommy George (Elk Grove, Calif./Elk Grove HS) went 4-for-6 on the day with one run.
 
The Otters outhit the Warriors, 19-17 but were only able to score six runs in their 16 innings.
 
CSUMB (15-15, 11-15 CCAA) looks to regroup this week before facing the Pioneers of Cal State East Bay next weekend.  The Otters travel to Hayward on Friday for a 3 p.m. game before returning home for an 11 a.m. doubleheader on Saturday.  The series finale is set for 11 a.m. in Hayward on Sunday.
 
Game 1: CSUS 5, CSUMB 3
 
For the first time this series, the Otters got on the board first with a run in the third inning.  George led off with a single and stole second before scoring on freshman Chris Blanton's single through the right side.
 
Stanislaus evened the game at one run apiece when Eli Davis hit a RBI single in the fifth inning.
 
Otters got back on top in the sixth on senior Chris Lopiccolo's (Marina, Calif./UCSB) bases loaded RBI single.
 
A three-run seventh inning gave the Warriors a 4-2 advantage when Davis and Michael Turay hit back-to-back doubles.
 
Both teams put up a single run in the eighth to conclude the game at 5-3.
 
Senior Donny Medlinger (San Jose, Calif./Cal Poly SLO) went for 6 1/3 innings, giving up three runs while walking four and striking out two. Cal State Stanislaus's Chris Short earned his first win of the year after coming in for starter Phil Quade in the sixth inning.
 
Game 2: CSUS 6, CSUMB 3
 
The Warriors posted back-to-back two-run innings to open the nightcap.
 
CSUMB cut the lead to 4-2 with runs in the third and fourth innings.  After drawing a walk and stealing second, freshman Matt Urakami (San Jose, Calif./Branham HS) scored the Otters first run on Blanton's single up the middle. CSUMB's second run came the following inning on junior David Garcia's (Gilroy, Calif./Mission College) single that plated Jason Merjano (San Ramon, Calif./Sierra College).
 
The Warriors added two more runs in the sixth on a bases loaded groundout by Ross Gonsalves and Michael Turay's fielder's choice.
 
A sacrifice fly by Urakami gave CSUMB its final run of the day.
 
Freshman Jeff Owen (Clovis, Calif./Clovis East) recorded the loss after five innings of work. He gave up four runs while striking out three.
