SEASIDE, Calif.- The Cal State Monterey Bay women's water polo team will reach it's mid-way point this weekend playing a total of six games in three days. This weekend marks the largest road trip of the year similar to years past. For the fifth consecutive season, the Otters have made an appearance in the Posada Royale Invitational hosted by Cal Lutheran. The Otters post a 14-7 overall record, highlighting a perfect 6-0 showing in 2008. The Otters begin the weekend stopping for a pair of games at Cal State San Bernardino where they play the hosting Coyotes as well as the Athenas of Claremont-Mudd-Scripps Friday afternoon.
COACHES CORNER WITH GARY FIGUEROA: “Exciting week for us. Six games in three days this weekend makes for too much fun. The best news is that things are coming together. Our losing streak has helped us take a close look at ourselves and what we need to change to be our best. Same message of improving team defense but we are now aware of the 'weak' spots. We have a heart to be better so expect improvement from here forward.”
OTTER PLAYMAKER: Junior
Jackie Walters has been the team leader in assists so far this season, compiling a respective total of 20. Walters recorded a single game season-high four assists versus Santa Clara on Feb. 4.
WWPA PLAY: The Otters open Friday afternoon playing against Cal State San Bernardino, the only WWPA conference opponent of the weekend. CSUMB holds a 5-3 overall record over the Coyotes dating back to 2007. The Otters earned a perfect 3-0 record against CSUSB in the 2011 season, including an 11-2 win over the Coyotes in the opening match at the WWPA Championship Tournament (April 29, 2011).
