BOX SCORE 2 SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team split a pair with Central Washington on Saturday at the Otter Sports Complex. The Otters dropped game one 8-7 before bouncing back with a convincing 6-1 victory.
Junior
Jason Merjano (San Ramon, Calif./Sierra College) continues to perform at the plate, going 4-for-8 with two doubles. Senior
Donny Medlinger (San Jose, Calif./San Jose City College) picked up his second win of the season after giving up only one run and striking out seven batters in 5.0 innings of action.
The Otters lead the series 2-1 with the final game tomorrow at 11 a.m.
Game 1: CWU 8, CSUMB 7
With hopes of another ninth inning rally similar to Friday's that led to a 14-inning marathon win, the Otters fell short one run in an 8-7 decision.
After the Wildcats drove in four runs in their frame, Merjano led off the ninth with a double and scored on
David Garcia's single. Designated hitter
Jeff Phillips (Fresno, Calif/Fresno City College) crushed a two-run double to score Garcia and
Brian Haggett (Hollister, Calif./Sacramento State) who reached on a walk. That would conclude the Otter rally as CWU's Drew Davidson would force two fly outs.
Game 2: CSUMB 6, CWU 1
The Otters showed no mercy in the nightcap by taking a 3-0 lead in the third inning with singles coming from senior
Danny Nelson (Morgan Hill, Calif/San Jose City College) and Haggett.
Both teams put up a run in the fifth with CWU's coming on a home run by Ryerson.
CSUMB extended its lead in the sixth by scoring two runs on three hits.
